Let me get this straight.... Jennifer Capriati was kicked off the US Fed Cup team for practicing too much? Huh?

It's not an easy or pretty thing to survive a homicide bomber.

This is downright scary. So if I have one more dollar than my neighbor, I'm some kind of greedy fiend? Where in the world do these people think wealth comes from? And do they forget that wealth is the only cure for poverty?

Sometimes it seems as if I have spent the first half of my life refusing to let white people define me and the second half refusing to let black people define me. -- Thomas Sowell

How could something like this happen in a gun control paradise like Germany?

I thought that we were going to run out of oil.

Here's one more reason that Jonah Goldberg is the most sensible man in America.

I thought that "Islam" meant "Peace". Huh.

I wonder if this guy got a fair trial like he could in Israel.

There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him. -- Robert Heinlein

This is a terrific look at the income tax. I consider income tax to be out and out theft. No, wait, I don't consider it theft, it is theft. The government (i.e. the majority of the people) take my money against my will and without my permission. What is stealing if not that? Man, I hate the income tax. Have I mentioned lately that I consider the IRS the most oppressive organization in the free world? Did you know you are guilty until proven innocent when dealing with the IRS?

I wonder if Federal law allows the government to fire these folks.

Put this one in the "Why didn't I think of that" file.

Where would the world be without men like General Douglas MacArthur?

Why I can't stand the French: Anti-semitism is growing in France -- violent anti-semitism. Reaction of the government, and people in general? Mild criticism of the offenders and muted reactions. A (supposed) right-winger comes in second in an election for Premier of France, and people take to the streets in protest, and every politician to the Left of this guy is decrying in ardent terms how horrible this is for France. Great. At least we know what's really important to the French.

More Homeless Buffoonery: I stole this from the "Best of the Web" put out each day by the Wall Street Journal. It was so rich, I had to note it. Here is an article written in an Athens, GA newspaper, about a 42 year old homeless Vietnam Veteran. Only, oops, if you are 42, you were born in 1960 or so, and thus 14 years old, or so, when the US Army pulled out of Vietnam. Mr. Simmons, the subject of the article, isn't the first one to claim being a Vietnam vet when he wasn't. The real laugh comes in the inability of Janis Reid, the author, to do a little simple math.

Is there a dumber invention in the history of the world than the CD jewel case? They break, you can't get them open, and you can't get the CD out of them. Just plain dumb.

This is a pretty cool Internet Clock

Jerk of the Week goes to Robert Kennedy, Jr. Apparently raising pigs is worse than mass murdering Americans.

Let me make sure I have this straight -- there is a democratic, fair, legal, election in France, and this means you take to the streets in violent protest. Huh? That's civilized?

I must include this marvelous, lucent, excellent quote by an unnamed reader of Jay Nordlinger's Impromptus column from 22 April 2002. Such clarity of thought is rare. The thought here has been on the tip of my tongue, and as usual I am not eloquent enough to articulate it.

“As far as I’m concerned, American civilization should take no heed, suffer no lectures, or entertain any advice whatsoever from Europe on any matter, large or small, regarding Jews and Israel. Indeed, I don’t think they have anything instructive to offer on the subject of tolerance and mixed populations living in harmony. Theirs is an unrelenting record of pogroms, persecution, and genocide against the Jews and others since there began what we could call a ‘Europe.’ Indeed, theirs is an unrelenting record of conquest, warfare, and purges against one another right up to the present. Absent an altruistic American intervention, they were perfectly content to allow the Yugoslavs to slaughter one another. They long ago disqualified themselves as moral judges.

“None of this is Europe bashing. I thank God for Europe as a developmental phase of Western Civilization. But the above is all true and is precisely why there is a United States. Our forebears fled all that and purposely built a country to be a haven from it. . . . We are the evolution of Western Civilization: not just the keeper of the flame, but the torchbearer carrying it forward. We have the society where peoples from all over the world live in what is probably as much harmony as is achievable on earth. We are the last, best hope of man — so long as we remember that, and how we got that way"

What's next? Will we have separate lunch rooms, locker rooms, and drinking fountains?

There is nothing more pathetic than old has-beens breaking their necks to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
